Chapter Fifteen

“I would like to be meet your family,” I said weakly.

Grant bit his lower lip. Now it irritated me that he was amused. “What?” I demanded. “You’ve met my whole family. You met them before we even started dating. You didn’t even run for the hills like any sane warlock would have done.”

“It’s my job to run toward danger,” he said, with a slight grin. “That’s what an investigator does. Especially one who investigates supernatural murders. By the way, how is the Root?”

“Probably causing mayhem,” I said. “We should go talk to them, as usual. I’m surprised by how quiet they’ve been, to tell the truth. I didn’t even see any representatives of theirs at the party, though to be fair, Jezebel said she saw Hammer hanging around. She didn’t know what he wanted. Clearly they’re involved in this somehow. They always are,” I added irritably.

“I wish I could tell you not to confront them without me,” he said.

“You definitely can’t tell me that,” I grumbled.

“What if I tell you it’s all right if I have dinner with a female from time to time?” he asked.

I flopped my hands around. He knew I was being ridiculous. “I suppose I believe you.”

Don’t get all jealous, Jane, I told myself. Especially not when the person he was having dinner with was his family. I mean, come on. The supernaturals had apparently failed to mention that the woman they’d seen was much older than he was. The next time I saw them I’d give them a piece of my mind. Maybe also a piece of an enchantment, if I was angry enough.

Grant slid his hand into mine. “Should we talk about our sixth date? I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks now.”

“It’s for me to plan,” I said, trying to regain my footing. This conversation was shifting from one topic to another too fast.

“Great,” he said.

“Great,” I said.

He squeezed my hand gently. “You don’t sound as thrilled as I was hoping you would.”

I looked at him. There was real worry in his eyes. My heart twisted. I was being a jerk. “There’s just one little detail that I have to figure out. Don’t worry. I will.”

His smile lit up his whole face. “If there’s one witch who can figure out details, it would be you.”

“Let’s hope so,” I said.

We continued to walk to his cottage. The two of us needed some alone time, and I hoped we’d get it. But as I glanced over my shoulder I saw Cookie watching us. Who knew what the nosy old biddy was concocting? If her expression was anything to go by, the ingredient list was long and troublesome.
